Is it possible to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider first?

Without knowing any other Tomb Raider games, Shadow of the Tomb Raider can be played. It is possible to enjoy it alone. If you've played the previous games you'll probably get more out of it, but it's mostly a stand alone adventure as the majority of plot threads from the previous games were tied up in those games.
