What is a limp mode in a transmission?

When the engine or transmission control unit picks up a fault, limp mode is activated, which is a security feature in cars. Once it discovers a problem, limp mode will cause the less important parts of the car, such as air conditioning, to switch off, and the speed of the car will be reduced.
