Why are Sonic games bad?

Poor controls, repetition, and lack of speed are all standard fare for the series today. Sonic Colors was the only game to escape these issues and Team Sonic seems to have abandoned all the design choices that made it great. 3D Sonic games are bad, but they were not always that bad.
