Why is it called Rust?

Rust was named after a fungus that is robust, distributed and parallel. It's also a part of the name "robust". Is there anything else you'd like to see? I can't blame anyone for thinking that Rust is a research language since it's being developed by Mozilla Research. "Exclusively relying on old technology and shunning the new", that's what this alludes to.
